Winter wonder: Holiday magic for students in the city

Whether you're searching for holiday cheer, cultural celebrations or seasonal fun with friends, here are five unique events to embrace winter wonder across the Circle City. 

1. Enjoy the Carmel Christkindlmarkt | Open through Dec. 24 

Step into a cozy, old-world holiday market at the Carmel Christkindlmarkt. Browse wooden huts filled with handcrafted ornaments, nutcrackers, music boxes and unique gifts inspired by traditional German Christmas markets — perfect for holiday shopping! 

2. Drive through Christmas Nights of Lights | Open through Dec. 31 

If you want a festive but low effort outing (perfect after finals), check out Christmas Nights of Lights at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Pack up a car with friends, tune your radio to the station provided and drive through a dazzling display of over one million LED lights synchronized to holiday music. 

3. Celebration Crossing | Open through Jan. 4 

Take a trip to the Indiana State Museum to enjoy Santa’s house, holiday décor, interactive activities and a “Snowfall Express” ride through a winter wonderland exhibit. 

4. Christmas at the Zoo | Open through Jan. 4 

Walk through the Indianapolis Zoo under lights, see winter-hardy animals like seals, walruses and red pandas, visit “Santa’s Magic Cottage” and enjoy festive treats.  

5. Wander through the Festival of Trees | Open through Jan. 4 

With more than 75 elaborately decorated trees, themed displays and holiday photo ops, this annual tradition hosted by the Indiana Historical Society brings out the magic of the season.
